Smart City: Indonesia's New Pathway to Attract Apple Investment

In a strategic move to bolster Apple Inc's engagement in Indonesia, President Joko Widodo has instructed Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordinating Minister Luhut Pandjaitan to coordinate Apple Inc's involvement in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN Nusantara) project. This directive comes following President Jokowi's meeting with Apple's Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook, at the State Palace on Wednesday, Apr. 17. "During the meeting, Tim Cook was asked if Apple could participate in the development of a smart city in the Nusantara Capital City," Luhut stated.
Meanwhile, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has persuaded Apple to establish a manufacturing plant in Indonesia. He claimed that many smartphone components can already be produced domestically. "We will attempt business matching with Apple to explore whether they can utilize domestically produced products we have already prepared," he said.
