Project Dragon's EV Battery Facility Construction About to Begin
PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, commonly known as Antam, sets its sights on establishing an industrial park dedicated to developing the electric vehicle battery ecosystem, slated for realization by 2025. This industrial park will primarily house nickel smelters employing high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) and rotary kiln electric furnace (RKEF) methods.
Nico Kanter, the CEO of Antam, emphasized the company's upstream position within the electric vehicle battery development consortium alongside Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL). Urgency underscores the need to swiftly construct smelters employing RKEF and HPAL technologies to ensure seamless business collaboration. "CATL has its consortium; next year, we must establish RKEF and HPAL smelters," he said on Mar. 25.
Nico Kanter stressed that the smelter's development aligns with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles, notably through the use of gas as an energy source for the HPAL smelter. The required 60-megawatt power supply for the HPAL smelter will be sourced from gas-fired power plants. "However, feasibility studies are still pending," he added.
