Indonesian Government Goes All In on Industrial Parks in Batam

President Joko Widodo has designated two industrial zones in the Riau Islands on the National Strategic Projects (PSN) list. These are the Wiraraja Industrial Park on Galang Island and the Toapaya Industrial Park.
The Wiraraja Industrial Park is a cluster of industrial areas centered in Punggur, Batam. On Galang Island, Wiraraja houses its corporate group, PT Galang Bumi Industri, to manage a land area of 3,589 hectares.
Tjaw Hieong, Director of Galang Bumi Industri, said the industrial park the company oversees would focus on solar farms and supporting industries in the new and renewable energy sector. It is located behind the Sei Gong Dam in Galang.
Of the 3,589 hectares of land under their control, 2,600 hectares are allocated for solar farms and green energy producers. "The rest is for supporting industries," he said on Mar. 19. Tjaw claims that the land for green energy industries and the smart eco-industrial park has a clean and clear status. "No residents live there."
Meanwhile, the Toapaya Industrial Zone is reportedly set to concentrate on ammunition and arms industries, the caustic soda industry, the oil refinery, the petrochemical industry, the shipyard, the steel smelting industry, and the recycling industry.
