The Politics Behind Indonesia's Coal and Mineral Regulation Revision
President Joko Widodo is set to amend Government Regulation No. 96/2021 concerning implementing Mineral and Coal Mining Business Activities. The plan to revise this regulation was discussed during a restricted cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Mar. 13. Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, and Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly attended the meeting.
According to Bahlil, the revision of this regulation will be completed promptly before the end of 2024 without specifying the details of the changes. "It will be completed soon," he said. Previously, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif revealed that the revision of Government Regulation No. 96/2021 includes the extension of special mining permits (IUPK) for mining companies that have established smelters, such as PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), whose concession will expire in 2041.
