Merah Putih 2 Satellite: Launched by SpaceX to Compete with Starlink
PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, known as Telkom, through its subsidiary PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia or Telkomsat, is set to launch the Merah Putih 2 satellite on Feb 20. Launched with a SpaceX rocket in Florida, USA, this initiative aims to expand internet access across Indonesia.
Lukman Hakim Abdul Rauf, the CEO of Telkomsat, said the satellite is powered by the state-of-the-art Spacebus 4000B2 platform with a designed lifespan of 15 years. Manufactured by Thales Alenia Space, a seasoned player in Telkom's satellite projects, the selection of partners and satellite procurement process adhered to compliance principles and good corporate governance, as stated on Feb 19.
Heru Sutadi, the Executive Director of the ICT Institute, emphasized Indonesia's persistent demand for satellite internet services. Merah Putih 2 is poised to meet this demand, given its classification as a Geostationary satellite with broad coverage. However, according to Heru, this does not mean Merah Putih 2 is without challenges. "It must remain dynamic and align with the pricing offered by other providers since the Indonesian market is sensitive to pricing," he stated.
