PDI-P at Crossroad: Joining Coalition or Preparing for Opposition Role

Chessboard, Rivalry
Summary

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) stands at a crossroads after the 2024 general elections, contemplating whether to join the government coalition or assume the role of a balancing force in the parliament. In a statement on Thursday, PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto expressed readiness for his party to become a government opposition. "During PDI-P's tenure outside the government in 2004 and 2009, we received much appreciation for our active participation in enhancing the quality of democracy," he stated on Feb 15.

It aligns with the directive from PDI-P's Chairwoman, Megawati Soekarnoputri, issued during the recent meeting at her residence on Jl. Teuku Umar, Central Jakarta, which prohibits all PDI-P cadres from joining the government.
