Govt to Develop Makassar New Port Amid Massive Environmental Issues

The government has officially signed Addendum II for the Makassar New Port Phase I Container Terminal Concession with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo. Antoni Arif Priadi, the Director General of Sea Transportation, stated that this collaboration aims to enhance efficiency and reduce logistics costs in the Eastern region of Indonesia. "This agreement reflects our commitment to improving port management to be more professional, effective, and efficient," he said on Jan 39.
According to Antoni, Makassar New Port is poised to become Eastern Indonesia's primary port and logistics distribution hub, particularly for exporting chocolate, coffee, and processed wood products. He mentioned that competitive tariffs at Makassar New Port would attract shipping companies, enabling larger-capacity vessels to operate on the Makassar-Surabaya route without going to Sorong or Ambon. "This will result in other vessels operating from Makassar, proving to be an attractive proposition for shipping companies," he added.
