Summary

The Indonesian government is actively promoting the development of nickel-based batteries and lithium-based batteries for electric vehicles. Indonesia has established a collaboration with China specifically for lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) batteries. "We're grateful that we're also developing LFP with China and others," Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan stated in a video message on Jan 25.

According to Luhut, Indonesia focuses on developing nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries that are recyclable or can enter the recycling stage. In contrast, he mentioned that LFP batteries are currently unrecyclable. Luhut acknowledged that research on LFP is progressing, raising the possibility of reducing nickel usage in batteries. However, he emphasized that Indonesia will continue to drive the downstream industry for nickel due to its abundant reserves.
