Monitoring Agency on Personal Data Protection Needs Rule to Run
The Indonesian government is set to issue regulations on the supervisory institution to protect personal data, which serves as the executor of Personal Data Protection (PDP) Law No. 27/2022. Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, the Communications and Information Technology Ministry's Director General of Information Applications, stated that the directorate is drafting a presidential regulation. "The target is mid-year," he said on Jan 26.
Semuel said the personal data protection supervisory institution would be directly under the president. Its duties and authorities are outlined in articles 59 and 60 of the PDP Law, which include formulating and determining policies and strategies for protecting personal data that serve as guidelines for personal data subjects, controllers, and processors. The institution is also expected to oversee the implementation of personal data protection, enforce administrative and legal measures against violations of the PDP Law, and facilitate dispute resolutions outside of the court system.
