Japanese companies have expressed interest in constructing and operating Sultan Aji Muhammad Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. Representatives from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) made this announcement during the Air Transportation Working Group (ATWG) session in Bandung on January 18-20, 2024.

Lukman F. Laisa, Transportation Ministry's Director of Airports, stated that Japan is bringing four companies to the table: Japan Airport Terminal Co Ltd, JALUX Inc, Taisei, and SECOM Co Ltd. These companies boast extensive experience managing major airports such as Haneda Airport and Narita Airport in Japan, as well as several international airports like Beijing International Airport in China and New Ulaanbaatar Airport in Mongolia. "The four companies have expressed their desire to develop Sepinggan Airport as the gateway to the Archipelago's Capital," he stated on Jan 21.
