Luhut Assigned to Lead Nuclear Development Team

Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has appointed Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan as the Head of the Nuclear Power Plant Development Acceleration Team. This team will report directly to President Jokowi, overseeing the preparation and implementation of nuclear power plant (PLTN) construction to support achieving the 2060 energy transition and net-zero emissions targets.

Before this, the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister issued Ministerial Decision 250.K/HK.02/MEM/2021 concerning the preparation team for establishing the Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (NEPIO). This initiative aims to fulfill the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for developing nuclear power plants. Djoko Siswanto, the National Energy Council (DEN) Secretary General, stated that the draft organization for NEPIO has been completed. "The development of nuclear energy must meet 19 criteria, and Indonesia has fulfilled 16 of them. The remaining three are NEPIO establishment, stakeholder support, and government policies," he said.
