Non-Nickel Battery Popularity to Alarm RI’ Downstreaming Campaign

The global electric vehicle (EV) industry is increasingly shifting towards non-nickel batteries. The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) reports that 75 percent of EVs sold in Indonesia in 2022 utilized lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) batteries, which do not rely on nickel as a raw material. One notable electric car brand adopting LFP batteries is the Wuling Air EV. Forbes further asserts that LFP batteries have become a predominant power source for many EVs in China and the United States.
Several major EV manufacturers are now veering away from nickel, with Tesla being a prominent example. Tesla announced its gradual departure from nickel-based batteries starting in October 2021 and has since adopted LFP batteries for its standard products. Tesla emphasized the importance of chemical battery diversification for long-term capacity growth, optimizing products for various use cases, and expanding their supplier base. "Diversifying battery chemical materials is crucial for long-term capacity growth, to further optimize our products for various use cases, and to expand our supplier base," Tesla stated on Jan 15, as reported by Spglobal.com.
