Activists Ask Jokowi to Step Down Over Election Integrity Violation

A group of activists under the Petisi 100 met with Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law and Security Mahfud MD in his office and discussed various problems, one of them was the possibility of impeaching President Joko Widodo following his roles behind various movements that threatened the election’s integrity.

Mahfud told the activists that they would have barked at the wrong tree if they sought his approval over the impeachment topic. He told them to hold a dialogue with the House of Representatives (DPR) as the lawmakers were the ones who, according to the 1945 Constitution, could initiate the impeachment process.

A similar aspiration was also voiced by Syaiful Mujani, a professor of politics who is also the founder of the Syaiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC). Syaiful said the impeachment was imperative as he acknowledged having witnessed a massive, systematic, and organized movement to engineer the 2024 General Elections in Jokowi’s favor.

Jokowi’s political supporters labeled the impeachment initiative as delusional, saying that as a president, Jokowi has done a terrific job; thus, no reasons are available to discuss impeachment possibilities.

Even further, former Constitutional Court Honorary Council Chief Jimly Asshiddiqie suspected the impeachment was merely a cover for the political contender who was afraid to lose in the upcoming Presidential Election.
