Inalum Gears Up to Expand Production
PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero), also known as Inalum, is set to embark on two significant projects in 2024. Inalum Chief Executive Officer Danny Praditya has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for two major endeavors: the expansion of an aluminum smelter in Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra, and the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) phase 2 project in Mempawah, West Kalimantan. "If all goes smoothly, construction may commence in 2025," he said on Jan 8.
The aluminum smelter in Kuala Tanjung will have a capacity of 600 thousand tons, while the capacity of SGAR phase 2 in Mempawah will escalate from 1 million to 3 million tons of alumina per year. Danny also mentioned that Inalum's aluminum production will increase from 250,000 to 274,140 tons in 2024. This surge in production is a result of Inalum's collaboration with a company from the United Arab Emirates, Emirates Global Alumina (EGA). "It includes various products such as ingots, billets, and alloys, all of which we prioritize for the domestic market. Any surplus will be directed toward export opportunities," he said.
