Summary

Norway has announced a US$100 million contribution to support Indonesia's sustainable efforts in reducing deforestation. The funding was declared at the COP28 event in Dubai. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that Indonesia has achieved its lowest deforestation rates in the last two decades. He emphasized Indonesia's critical role in the collective fight against climate change through its deforestation initiatives.

Støre said the US$100 million contribution acknowledges the reduction in emissions from deforestation in Indonesia in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. "This represents one of the largest single climate mitigation contributions globally since the Paris Agreement was launched in 2015. Norway is proud to partner with Indonesia, and we hope our contribution will inspire others to follow suit," he stated on Dec 1.

Indonesia's Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya said the new partnership between Indonesia and Norway was initiated through a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2022. This partnership aims to support the Forest and Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030. According to her, the partnership has been highly effective so far. "The first contribution was made last October, and this new contribution signifies recognition of Indonesia's success in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, setting an example," she said.
