RI Carefully Mulling AI Regulation, Ensuring It Goes Right Way

Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani has expressed caution over the use of artificial intelligence (AI), citing its potential threat to the sustainability of democracy. According to Sri, the implementation of AI poses a challenge for democratic nations, including Indonesia, Europe, and the United States. She highlighted concerns about AI categorizing and segmenting society based on specific criteria. "Artificial intelligence is very systematic in categorizing society," she stated during the Indonesia-EU Investment Summit 2023 on Thursday.
In a related development, the Chairman of the Indonesian Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation Industry Collaboration (Korika) Hammam Riza stated that Indonesia's regulatory direction in AI development is leaning towards the existing frameworks in the United States and Europe, which favor open technology. Hammam emphasized that the government will not hastily enact regulations to avoid missteps. Given its continuous evolution and dual nature, he pointed out the complexity of regulating AI. "The risks associated with the emergence of AI are significant, but on the other hand, it has the potential to bolster the nation's economy," he said.
