Bontang LNG Refinery to Continue Operational with New, Massive Backup

The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas) has announced that the discovery of a substantial gas reserve in the North Ganal Working Area in East Kalimantan is set to enhance the operational capacity of the Bontang LNG refinery.
SKK Migas Head Dwi Soetjipto stated that Eni's gas production in the North Ganal Working Area would be integrated with the Indonesia Deepwater Development (IDD) project and output from the Jangkrik field and then channeled to the Bontang LNG refinery.
According to Dwi, contractors will not need to construct a new LNG plant like in Tangguh but can instead utilize the existing facilities at Bontang. "Currently operating with two trains, the addition of North Ganal and the northern part of IDD will expand the operation to four trains with one train on standby. This is an excellent way to utilize the Bontang LNG Plant," he said Thursday.
Dwi stated that Eni, as the operator of North Ganal, plans to expedite the development plan at the Geng North-1 well by adopting strategies previously implemented in Egypt. This approach will enable the North Ganal Working Area to commence production by 2027-2028.
