Govt Tailors Circular to Mitigate Risk, Maximize AI Benefits

Summary

The Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is set to launch regulations regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in December. Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology Nezar Patria stated that these rules will be a circular letter intended as a recommendation. "We'll discuss the draft of these regulations next week. Then, we will consider feedback from various stakeholders," he mentioned on Nov 24.

Nezar explained that the draft of the circular letter has been in development for almost a year. The Communications Ministry, he added, has opted for a normative approach rather than an imperative one, like a ministerial regulation. The reason behind this choice is that the government does not want to limit the innovations emerging from the use of AI. "We aim to address AI with a balanced approach, maximizing its benefits while minimizing its risks," Nezar stated.
