Surya Airways to Hit Commercial Flight Debut Amid Tight Competition

A new airline, Surya Airways, will soon be operational after obtaining a Standard Certificate for Scheduled Commercial Transport on Oct 9. PT Surya Mataram Indonesia President Commissioner Benny Rustanto said the airline had obtained a Business Field Standard Classification Code for domestic and international flights, including air cargo, with domestic investment status.

According to Benny, Surya Airways will serve domestic flight routes, especially in second-tier cities. The reason, he said, is so that Surya Airways can improve air connectivity in Indonesia, which is an archipelago. "We have entered the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) pre-application stage so that we will start operating in the second quarter of 2024," he said, as quoted by Bisnis Indonesia on Oct 16. In the initial stage, Surya Airways will operate three aircraft made in 2014. It will gradually operate ten ATR 72-600S aircraft of the latest type.
