China Invites ASEAN Countries to Develop Biomass Technology

Biomass
Summary

China is developing eco-friendly biomass production technology for ASEAN countries. The Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC) developed the technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). GIEC researcher Liu Huacai said energy demand in ASEAN countries has increased significantly due to development, urbanization, and population growth. "There is a need for modern biomass technology for sustainable energy, protecting the environment, and enhancing rural economic development," he said, as reported by CGTN on Oct 15.

GIEC is already building modern biomass projects in Thailand. The country has rich biomass resources such as crop straw and wood waste. However, GIEC sees biomass gasification projects in Thailand facing problems, such as poor fuel flexibility, low gasification efficiency, high tar content in the gas, and secondary pollution from tar wastewater. After Thailand, CAS will establish two pilot projects in Malaysia and Indonesia through the Institute of Urban Environment (IUE).
