Indonesia Embarks on Green Hydrogen Production

Hydrogen
Summary

Indonesia officially opened its first Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP). Operated by PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), a subsidiary of the state-owned energy company PT PLN (Persero), this facility, situated in the Muara Karang Steam Gas Power Plant (PLTGU) area in Pluit, Jakarta, has an annual hydrogen production capacity of 51 tons.

Green hydrogen is hailed as a clean and sustainable energy source, distinguished by its emission of only water vapor, leaving no environmental residue or carbon emissions. Yudo Priaadi, Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources emphasized the environmental benefits, stating that it aligns with Indonesia's commitment to cleaner energy solutions.

Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PLN, sees green hydrogen as a pivotal component of Indonesia's energy transition strategy. It plays a crucial role in achieving the ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2060. He stressed that green hydrogen will serve as a future alternative fuel, especially in the transportation sector. Prasodjo pointed out that the future of transportation is not solely electric; hydrogen-powered vehicles are gaining prominence.

"PLN, as a key player in the energy transition, is committed to providing clean energy solutions to the public," stated Prasodjo, underscoring the utility's dedication to sustainable energy initiatives.
