Summary

President Joko Widodo officially inaugurated Indonesia's first high-speed train operation, connecting Jakarta and Bandung, West Java, on Monday. Now, the Indonesian government is shifting its focus to the next plan: extending the route to Surabaya, East Java.

Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordinating Minister Luhut Pandjaitan stated that the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train will be extended to the Kertajati-Solo-Yogyakarta-Surabaya route, creating interconnectivity from West Java to East Java with this new mode of transportation. "The president has instructed us to conduct a study on extending the high-speed railway from Jakarta-Bandung to Surabaya," he said on Sept 29.

Luhut explained that Java Island is targeted to be a city island, and the high-speed train is expected to be a mode of transportation that stimulates new economic centers in the regions it traverses. "Therefore, it cannot be concluded that it must be done," he stated.

The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Train, named "Whoosh," has a speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour, connecting Tegalluar in Bandung, West Java, with Halim Perdanakusuma in East Jakarta.
