Indonesia’s Fresh Push Towards a Pharma-Level “Jamu” Industry
The government has issued Presidential Regulation No. 54/2023 on the Development and Utilization of Jamu (traditional herbal medicine), which includes an action plan for developing the jamu industry.
The Jamu Manufacturers Association (GP Jamu) General Chairperson Dwi Ranny Pertiwi Zarman welcomes this regulation as a positive step to boost the sales performance of jamu, which has declined after rising in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. “After the pandemic was over, there was a drop due to weakening purchasing power,” she said, as quoted by Bisnis Indonesia on Sept 26.
Dwi is optimistic that the demand for jamu products will increase again with the Presidential Decree, which attaches a road map for the development of jamu for 2023–2045. She said that sales and purchasing power have returned to a stable level like before the pandemic, but this shows a weakening trend.
Therefore, regulation, innovation, and promotion are needed to maintain these unique Indonesian products. She added that the development of jamu is also carried out by factories through independent research and development.
