Carbon Exchange Launched, Carbon Tax Questioned
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated the first carbon exchange trading at the Indonesia Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Sept 26.
He said that Indonesia has a huge potential for carbon exchange, valued at more than Rp 3,000 trillion. “We have about one giga ton of carbon dioxide that can be captured and traded as carbon credits,” he said.
Jokowi added that Indonesia has a great advantage in natural base solutions, as it is the only country that can reduce its carbon emissions by 60 percent from the natural sector.
He also said that the carbon exchange is in line with the global trend of transitioning to a green economy. “This is a concrete and significant step for Indonesia to achieve its National Determined Contribution target,” Jokowi said.
