Summary

The government has planned to sanction those who contribute to air pollution in Jakarta and its surrounding areas.

Jakarta Environment Agency Head Asep Kuswanto has formed an Emission Test Task Force that includes the Transportation Agency, the Jakarta Metro Police, and the Militar Garrison Command I.

Starting on Sept 1, the task force will conduct raids on motorized vehicles that do not pass emission tests. “The program is tailored to ensure control over emissions from motorized vehicles,” Asep said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Environment and Forestry Ministry has suspended operations at four companies suspected of causing air pollution in the Greater Jakarta region.

The Ministry’s Director General for Law Enforcement Rasio Ridho Sani identified these firms as PT Wahana Sumber Rezeki and PT Unitama Makmur Persada in Marunda Nusantara Bonded Zone (KBN), North Jakarta; PT Maju Bersama Sejahtera in Cakung, East Jakarta; and PT Pindo Deli 3’s Fly Ash and Bottom Ash (FABA) dumping activities in Karawang Regency, West Java.
