BRICS Announces Six New Members, Indonesia Not Included
BRICS bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa announced six countries as its new members, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Argentina, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
"[They will] become full members of BRICS, and the memberships will take effect from Jan 1, 2024," South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said as reported by AFP on Thursday.
South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said BRICS leaders had agreed on mechanisms for considering new members so that dozens of countries across the Global South could potentially join the alliance. However, one of the BRICS member state officials, who attended the discussions, said leaders had yet to sign any final admissions framework for new members.
