BRICS Summit: Indonesia’s Dilemma in the Rising Economic Powerhouse
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo participated in the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, as a guest of honor from Aug 22 to Aug 24.
He was invited by South Africa, the current chair of the BRICS, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
“Indonesia is not a BRICS member,” Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said on Monday.
Before his departure on Aug 20, Jokowi said he would bring the “Bandung Spirit” to the BRICS Summit.
The Bandung Spirit refers to the principles of solidarity and cooperation among the Global South countries that emerged from the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia.
“Indonesia also played an important role in founding the non-aligned movement at that time and the Bandung Spirit, which I will carry with me on my visit to Africa,” Jokowi said.
