TransJakarta to Boost Electric Bus Fleet to Tackle Worsening Pollution
The Jakarta provincial administration is accelerating the procurement of 100 TransJakarta buses to reduce pollution in the transportation sector.
According to Jakarta Transportation Agency head Syafrin Liputo, TransJakarta currently operates 52 of the 100 electric buses that are targeted to operate in 2023.
Capable of accommodating 50 passengers each, these electric buses will hopefully help reduce carbon emissions. "Our target is to encourage electrification of public transportation services," he said on Tuesday.
PT Mayasari Bakti, as the operator-partner of TransJakarta, procured all of the new electric buses. The electric buses are operated on middle routes, including the 1P non-bus rapid transit route of Pasar Senen-Blok M and the 1R route of Pasar Senen-Tanah Abang.
TransJakarta spokesperson Wibowo said the operation of electric buses was in accordance with the commitment to reduce transportation costs and control air pollution. "We are also working hard to arrange routes so that they can reduce emissions," he said.
