Indonesia Aims for BRICS Membership

Indonesia's economy
Summary

After trying to join the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Indonesia is exploring the idea of joining an economic alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).

The Spectator Index reported that Indonesia and 12 other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran, Mexico, and Argentina, have already applied for BRICS membership.

Indonesia even plans to send a delegation to the BRICS Summit, which will take place in South Africa this August. "That's the plan, just wait [for the announcement] until everything is ready," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Monday.

Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo denied that Indonesia has joined BRICS. "We will decide [whether to join or not] later," he said on Tuesday.
