Iran Aircraft Purchase Scandal Threatens Indonesia-US Relations

Indonesia is allegedly involved in the manipulation of aircraft purchases from France intended for Iran. The information was first disclosed by Iranian writer Babak Taghvaee through his Twitter account, @BabakTaghvaee1.
Taghvaee claimed that his investigation revealed the involvement of Indonesian and Malian authorities in facilitating Iran's evasion of United States sanctions, with two Airbus A340-212 aircraft being flown to Iran on May 23.
"Indonesian and Malian authorities were involved in assisting Iran in circumventing US sanctions and delivering the aircraft to Iran," Taghvaee said on Thursday.
Social media also became abuzz with a photograph of an Airbus 340-200 aircraft parked at West Java International Airport (BIJB) Kertajati, Majalengka Regency.
West Java International Airport Kertajati Executive General Manager Nuril Huda admitted that the foreign plane had been parked there since Apr 2022.
According to Huda, the aircraft was initially awaiting a maintenance schedule from PT Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) Aero Asia, which had a long waiting list.
However, Huda dismissed the accusation that Kertajati Airport had become a location for holding aircraft intended for Iran. "The plane has complied with all legal procedures for landing and taking off from Indonesia."
