Electricity Shortage in Batam May Disrupt Investment

The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry said that Batam is currently experiencing a shortage of electricity supply that may hamper the city's investment growth. The electricity director general Jisman P. Hutajulu noted that he experienced Batam's electricity state firsthand in the past few days.
"The Tanjung Kasam Steam Power Plant [PLTU] reserve margin is getting smaller. Some customers who also own generators have asked PLN Batam for diesel fuels to turn them on. It's not healthy," he said during PT PLN Batam's 2022-2032 RUPTL Dissemination event on Monday.
He then asked PLN Batam to improve the electricity system through power plant maintenance while also questioning why the reserve margin was only three percent.
Such a poor state is worrying, considering that Batam is one of Indonesia's industrial and investment-friendly areas. "Recently, there have been discussions that Batam is experiencing an energy shortage, which is not good. How would [interested parties] invest?" he said.
