ASEAN to Develop Regional EV Ecosystem to Boost Bargaining Position
The 2023 ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara explored a cooperation in developing EV ecosystems at the regional level. In a joint statement, ASEAN country leaders acknowledged the significant role of EVs in ASEAN's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate energy transitions, decarbonize land transportation, achieve net zero emission targets, and improve energy security.
ASEAN country leaders have pledged to develop a regional EV ecosystem. They said they would “involve all members who support the adoption of electric vehicles and the improvement of the electric vehicle industry,” in a statement on Thursday. The collaboration will include:
- Improving infrastructure and charging stations.
- Creating a conducive business environment and investment climate.
- Optimizing the production and use of sustainable resources.
- Increasing the participation of micro, small, and medium enterprises.
- Establishing research and development collaborations and human resource development.
- Promoting investment opportunities and raising public awareness.
- Minimizing environmental impact.
- Strengthening regional energy security.
- Promoting renewable energy in the mobility sector.
- Transitioning gradually from conventional internal combustion engines to Zero-Emission Vehicles, including EVs.
- Discussing the financing agenda to support the EV ecosystem development in the region.
