NTT Prepares 3 Regencies to Become National Salt Producers
East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat said three provincial regencies - Kupang, Nagekeo, and Malacca - will be designated as national salt barns.
“To make Malaka Regency a salt barn, Regent Simon Nahak has held a meeting with the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to discuss plans for developing a larger salt business in Malacca Regency,” Viktor said.
Viktor said that Indonesia currently imports 3.7 million metric tons of salt annually. Although Madura has been designated as a national salt barn, its salt ponds face challenges due to the expansion of shrimp ponds in the region. Furthermore, Java and Madura are affected by climate change, which causes rain throughout the year. In contrast, Timor Island has a climate more suitable for salt farming.
