Payment System War in Indonesia Intensifies

Bank Indonesia will launch a domestic credit card system in April. Bank Indonesia (BI) spokesperson Erwin Haryono said a domestic credit card would complement existing national payment systems such as the National Payment Gateway (GPN) and BI Fast.
According to him, Bank Indonesia has completed several initiatives in the final or settlement process.
Erwin also revealed that Bank Indonesia had been in talks with industry players. Unlike Mastercard or Visa, a domestic credit card will simplify the settlement of transactions performed locally. "When we shop in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bali, the settlement is still being carried out abroad," he explained last week.
