CBL Asked to Start Nickel Smelter Construction at Year's End

Summary

The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry asked PT Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Co Ltd (CBL) to start the construction of its nickel smelter employing High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology at the end of this year.

The factory, with a capacity of 6-7 million tons of low-grade nickel ore or limonite annually, will sit on land owned by PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM) on Obi Island, North Maluku.

"At the end of this year, after the feasibility study is completed, the land clearing will begin," the ministry's staffer on the industrial development acceleration of the energy and mineral sector Agus Tjahajana said on Tuesday.

According to Agus, Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), Antam, and CBL negotiate stakes in the smelter and its operations through a joint feasibility study. He hopes the study will be completed soon so the construction can start at the end of this year.
