Chinese Nickel Workers Complain over Poor Treatments in Indonesia

Three Chinese workers at PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Central Sulawesi have filed a complaint with Indonesia's National Commission on Human Rights over poor workplace conditions.

They claimed to have "endured a lot of physical, psychological, financial damages to their reputation as human beings," according to a statement from the law firm representing them on Friday.

Reuters reported AMAR Law Firm & Public Interest Law Office revealed these IMIP workers did not get proper safety and respiratory gear, had to work long hours without breaks, and experienced pay cuts.

Their passports were seized, and they could not form a union. Airlangga Julio from the law firm elaborates that these three Chinese workers experienced such treatment between 2020 and 2022.

Uli Parulian Sihombing of the National Commission for Human Rights assured that his side would study the case even though it has no punitive power. These workers urged the commission to "look into, probe, monitor" the "rights violations at the IMIP area whether they be migrant or Indonesian workers."
