Apple Scrapped Plans to Build Factory in Indonesia on Illegal Mining
US technology giant Apple Inc expressed interest in investing in and establishing a factory in Indonesia back in 2016. However, according to Septian Hari Seto, Deputy for Investment and Mining Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, the company scrapped its plans due to rampant illegal mining practices in the country, particularly in tin mining.
During that time, Apple had made it clear that it would only consider tin supplies obtained through legitimate and responsible mining practices.
This was because illegal mining operations had the potential to produce tin supplies that did not meet the required standards. "They also keep track of it and only approve tin that comes from responsible mining practices," Septian said Thursday.
Apple's investment plans in Indonesia have since come to a halt, and there has been no further communication with the Indonesian government on this matter. "Therefore, it is crucial to first improve the governance of tin mining," Seto emphasized.
