USA, EU Disapprove of Indonesia's New Criminal Code
The United States government is criticizing and questioning Indonesia's latest Criminal Code (KUHP) which will come into force in 2026. This was conveyed by Antony Blinken, United States Secretary of State, during a telephone call with Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on Feb 16. "Minister Blinken expressed concern regarding the provisions in Indonesia's new criminal law," US Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Ned Price said.
The European Union also noticed some changes in the new law. European Union Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Piket said that, despite the three-year legal socialization period, he hoped Indonesian law would comply with international human rights. Several articles that worry the European Union are restrictions on the freedom of expression, such as sex outside of wedlock and cohabitation, moral articles. Piket said it would make European tourists think twice about vacationing in Indonesia.
