Heavy Rain Hampers Freeport Mining Activities

Summary

PT Freeport Indonesia temporarily suspended its mining operations in Tembagapura, Mimika, Central Papua, due to heavy rainfall that caused mud flooding in some of the concentrate processing plant locations and damage to mine roads from landslides. Freeport Indonesia's President Director Tony Wenas announced that the mining and processing activities had been temporarily halted for recovery purposes.

Furthermore, 14 employees who were trapped by the floods have been evacuated. Tony hopes the mine can resume operations soon. "The situation in MP [Mile Post] 74 plant of Tembagapura is under control," he said.

PT Freeport Indonesia Vice President Corporate Communications Katri Krisnati said the heavy rainfall in Tembagapura led to the flooding of the West Gully Road, which provides access to the MP 74 concentrate processing plant of Freeport Indonesia.
