Garuda Bridge, China's New Project in Kalimantan

Chinese contractor China State Construction Overseas Development Shanghai will build the Garuda Bridge in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, in cooperation with PT Kapuas Bekah Illahi. The bridge, which passes through the Kapuas River, will be completed in 2024. Kapuas Berkah Illahi President Director Karsono said construction would start in March 2023. "We are still waiting for recommendations from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing," he said on Feb 3, 2023.
According to Karsono, the bridge will overcome access problems from Pontianak to the northern part of West Kalimantan. The 700-meter-long bridge cuts travel time from two hours by ferry to only 15 minutes. Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono said the naming of Garuda Bridge is a tribute to the hero from Pontianak, Sultan Hamid II, who designed Garuda as the symbol of Indonesia.
