Jokowi Revives Jakarta Giant Sea Wall Project

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has ordered the Jakarta Provincial Government to immediately build a giant sea wall. He said that this giant embankment must be built immediately to prevent tidal flooding in Jakarta. He admitted that the existing embankment is sufficient as a temporary solution. "But in the long run, the giant sea wall must also be started immediately," Jokowi said on Friday.

The government and many experts have discussed the plan to build a giant sea wall after land subsidence occurred in several areas in Jakarta. The giant wall is expected to prevent Jakarta from sinking because the land surface is lower than the sea level. The Jakarta government has formed the Jakarta Coastal Defend Strategy (JCDS) with several researchers. JCDS is designing a giant sea wall called the Great Garuda.
