Indonesia Urges Eramet and BASF to Realize US$2.5 Mln Smelter

Investment Minister/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Bahlil Lahadalia urged French mining company Eramet to start a smelter project to support Indonesia's EV battery ecosystem as soon as possible. Eramet is teaming up with German chemical company BASF in the Sonic Bay project centered in Weda Bay, North Maluku, with a total investment of US$2.2-2.5 billion. "I expect Eramet's commitment to realize this project and start the construction works immediately," Bahlil said on Sunday. Last Thursday, in a meeting with Eramet's Senior VP of corporate affairs & partnership Pierre-Alain Gautier in London, England, Bahlil also asked Eramet to involve local businesses in the project. "Mining contractors must give local entrepreneurs a share to create equitable opportunities. So, I hope this will be the focus of the Eramet-BASF discussion," he said.
Responding to the request, Pierre expressed the company's readiness to involve more local businesses. In return, Eramet asked the ministry to accelerate the processing of land conservation permits. "Perhaps our project with BASF can serve as a concrete example of a sustainable, global, strategic mineral resource partnership," Pierre stated.
