Petronas Mulls Becoming Pertamina's Partner in East Natuna Block
Petronas is one of the new enthusiasts in developing Indonesia's largest gas field East Natuna Block. The Upstream Oil and Gas Business Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) said it has received Malaysia's energy company interest and will immediately bridge the talks with PT Pertamina as the block's operator. "They [Petronas] are interested, but they have to negotiate with Pertamina as well," Head of SKK Migas Dwi Soetjipto said on Tuesday.
According to him, Petronas is one of the most active Cooperation Contract Contractors (KKKS) in Indonesia as it manages Ketapang and North Madura Blocks. "We will also immediately encourage [Petronas] to develop East Natuna," he said.
Moreover, current technology is developing rapidly and can help develop the East Natuna Block. The block had previously stalled on the back of the high carbon content. "There is already CCUS technology [carbon capture, utilization, and storage], so now the high CO2 content [in the East Natuna Block] can be handled immediately," Dwi said.
