PLN Starts the Construction of US$850 Mln Cisokan Hydropower

Executive PLN
Summary

PLN started the construction of a 4x260 MW Cisokan Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) project, which spent US$850 million in investment, marked by a groundbreaking on Thursday. The company targets the clean energy plant, located on the border of West Bandung Regency and Cianjur Regency, West Java, to operate by 2027.

Director of Geothermal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Harris A Yahya said Indonesia, in the energy transition agenda, has a plan to retire coal-fired power plants (PLTU). Therefore, there needs to be a replacement with higher capacity and capable of becoming a baseload, so PLN can still supply reliable electricity. "PLTA can become a baseload," Harris said.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said the Cisokan hydropower plant is the first in Indonesia with pump storage technology. "This is an extraordinary breakthrough because it makes hydropower functions like power storage, which can be very efficient and reliable to activate, especially during peak load conditions. This technology will add greater system reliability," he said.
