President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo again did not attend the United Nations General Assembly which was held in New York, United States, on Sept 12-27. Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi attended instead, representing Jokowi. Director General of Multilateral Cooperation Tri Tharyat refused to explain the reason for Jokowi's absence.

What is clear, Tri said Indonesia would carry out a mission during its G20 presidency and seek to raise strategic issues. "There are three issues that we are promoting, namely energy security, digital economy transition, and global health architecture," he said. Indonesia wants to push back the important role of the United Nations in handling global challenges such as pandemics, economic recovery, climate change, global health architecture, and multilateralism.
