What Do China-Taiwan Heightened Tensions Means for Indonesia?
The Indonesian government worries about the potential conflict between China and Taiwan. Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah said heightened tensions between two great powers in East Asia are very alarming. "If not managed properly, such rivalry may lead to an open conflict, disrupt stability and peace, including in the Taiwan Strait," he said Wednesday.
According to him, Indonesia is urging both sides to avoid making any move that may worsen the situation since the last thing the world needs at the moment is another war. He assured, "Indonesia still acknowledges the One-China policy." For the record, the tension is the result of the visit of the United States House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on August 2, 2022. China did not welcome her presence, which claims the island was part of its territory.
