Indonesia Commences World’s Largest Waste Management Project

Summary

The Indonesian government has unveiled plans to improve waste management systems throughout the country. The new program, titled "Bersih Indonesia: Eliminasi Sampah Plastik," aims to fulfill targets set by the country's National Action Plan for Marine Debris Handling and National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP). With the aim to reduce marine plastic waste by 70 percent before 2025, Bersih Indonesia is channeling part of the country's projected US$18 billion capital investment into waste management between 2017 and 2040, in line with wider national priorities for sustainability.

Alliance president and CEO Jacob Duer said Bersih Indonesia would ride the momentum created by the Indonesian government to advance the country's waste management capacity and capability. "The program also has the potential to create a blueprint for financially sustainable waste management systems in emerging markets, where investment in this space has traditionally been a significant hurdle," Duer told resource.co, Tuesday.
