Experts: Electricity Rate Hike May Boost Solar Panel Use

Summary

The electricity rate increase for wealthy customers in the R2 and R3 Household groups, which will come into effect on July 1, 2022, is expected to create momentum to boost the installation of rooftop solar power plants (PLTS). Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) executive director Fabby Tumiwa said on Monday that the use of rooftop solar panels "can slightly reduce the impact of the increase in electricity rates."

Real Estate Indonesia (REI) general chairman Totok Lusida also shared the same sentiment and projected that, in the future, developers might offer houses with installed solar panels as a result of the increase. REI also wants Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry to divert the allocation of the Public Service Agency (BLU) funds for rooftop solar power plants. "Therefore, the use of solar energy can be more evenly distributed," he said.
