Renewables Bill Categorizes Coal Subproducts as Renewables

The latest Renewable Energy Bill (RUU EBT) categorizes several coal by-products as renewable energy sources. According to the draft law, new energy sources are energy sources that new technologies can produce, both from renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
Article 9 Paragraph 1 of the bill states that new energy sources consist of nuclear and other sources that can be categorized as new energy according to recent technological advancements. "Other new energy sources include hydrogen, coal bed methane, liquefied coal, and gasified coal," the bill states.
House of Representatives's (DPR) deputy chairman of the energy commission Eddy Soeparno claimed that the carbon in these coal subproducts would no longer exist. "Carbon content in coal is already very minimal and is therefore included in the iron energy category," said Eddy. As a result, there is close to zero risk of pollution.
