Publisher Rights Determines the Future of Indonesia's Media Business

Summary

The Press Council and the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) encourage the government to ratify regulations on publisher rights. PWI General Chairman Atal S Depari said that his party and the Press Council had submitted a bill on publisher rights to the government in October 2021. Press Council member Ahmad Djauhari assessed that the legal basis needed to differentiate mainstream media journalism products from social media is a new law.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo offered three options on publisher rights: establishing new law, revising the existing law on the media industry, or issuing a government regulation as the quickest option. "We leave it to PWI and the Press Council so that we can finalize the regulation. I will continue to push it after the choice has been determined, whether it's a new law, revised existing law, or imposing presidential regulation," Jokowi said while attending the 2022 National Press Day, Wednesday.
